Alternative Sexuality – The BDSM Scene

Alternative Lifestyles – Taboos, Myth and Reality

Sadomasochism is an erotic sexual play done through infliction of pain and/or humiliation. This is an unorthodox method of sexual stimulation, in which an individual make use of physical objects and materials to inflict pain for gratification. Up to this date, this kind of practice is considered as a taboo to the majority. Even at this time where many have already been informed about this practice, most communities have remained to think of it as a cult intervention or a blasphemous provocation to god. Some people have also identified this practice as a mental or psychological disturbance as a result of poor mother-child relationship, thus it requires medical attention.

Bondage and discipline, and Sadism and Masochism (BDSM) is somehow similar to sadomasochism per se. However, BDSM definition is more focused on the aspect of mutual interpersonal relationships with involvement of intimate-power play through use of constraints and pain. Unlike plain sadomasochism, BDSM requires consent from both partners to avoid legal implications. There are actually 3 roles for this kind of activity:

  • Dominant – this person does the constraining and inflicting of pain to the partner.
  • Submissive – this person acquires the physical and psychological gratification through the pain and constraint inflicted by the dominant
  • Switch – this is an exchange of role during BDSM sexual foreplay.

BDSM is non-specific. It means that it does not happen to a particular race, culture, or country. No one is being chosen to have BDSM: Men, Women, heterosexuals, homosexuals, Americans, Chinese, and so on.

Way back, BDSM was considered as a mental disease, in which people who practiced it were thrown to asylums for treatment.  Then, it was changed into a mental disorder, and yet mental treatment remained as an imperative action towards psychological well-being.  But in 1994, DSM-IV TR was released and BDSM was removed as a disorder. Nevertheless, in order for a person to be diagnosed as mentally ill, he or she must possess clinically significant signs of altered social and occupational functioning due to BDSM practice. Therefore, nobody is deemed “crazy” just because of BDSM.

On top of that, people are starting to be open with this kind of sexual practice. In fact, BDSM advocates have regarded this as an alternative lifestyle. Nonetheless, it is important not to discriminate and subjugate these people for they deserve same equal treatment as of the others. As long as they keep the practice into safety and they intend no harm to other people, let them be.
